Balance Hormones for Better Skin

To the surprise of many women, much of why our skin begins to age as it does is due to changes in our hormones. As we age, our hormone levels can become imbalanced, causing our skin to become drier, more prone to wrinkles, more fragile, less elastic, and even paler.

So while extrinsic factors like pollution, sun damage and lifestyle may play a significant role, much of how our skin ages is due in large part to intrinsic factors such as genetics and an increase or decrease in our hormones which can imbalance the delicate levels that determine the health and vitality of our skin.

Estrogen: The biggest culprit in aging our skin is a decrease in estrogens which can cause the skin to appear thin, sallow, and saggy. Fine lines turn into deep wrinkles as its decrease can also reduce the production of collagen and elastin, the proteins that determine skin thickness and elasticity. Estrogens are also responsible for regulating the number of blood vessels in the skin, so a decrease results in pale, dull skin with a lack of nutrients reaching the skin’s surface.

Testosterone: Testosterone stimulates our oil-producing glands which protect our skin with natural oils. Your body keeps a delicate balance of hormones such as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. An imbalance in hormones – specifically an increase in testosterone – can lead to adult acne.

Thyroid Hormones: An increase in thyroid hormones can cause the skin to become warm, sweaty, and flushed while an underactive thyroid can lead to dry, coarse thickening of the skin with a reduced ability to sweat. Thyroid dysfunction can also lead to thinning hair and eventual hair loss.
