Acne_TreatmentAcne is the most common skin condition in the United States – and it’s not just teenagers affected by acne.  The unsightly and embarrassing bumps effect people of all ages, both male and female.  Diagnosing and treating your acne is important to self-esteem and prevention of acne scarring.

Who gets acne?

Nearly everyone has had at least one pimple. About 40 to 50 million Americans have acne at any one time. While teenagers are a large group of patients seen for acne, it can occur at any age – even in newborn babies. Into adulthood – acne, including cystic acne – can effect both men and women even after they’ve reached middle age.

What causes acne?

Acne is generally caused by clogged pores in our skin. Typically, dead skin cells are shed – but sometimes, they can stick together and get stuck in our pores. The cells stick together due to sebum, of which the body periodically increases production to keep our skin from drying out. When this happens – the dead skin cells get trapped inside the pores, accumulate there – and irritate the bacteria that lives on our skin.  With the bacteria multiplying inside the clogged pore causing inflammation. The pore becomes red and swollen as an acne cyst or ‘pimple’ appears.
