SKINTASTIC offers permanent laser hair removal, with both IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and with the Candela Alexandrite laser. Laser Hair Removal Treatments with the Candela Alexandrite laser are offered exclusively at SKINTASTIC’s Uptown Dallas location. Patient Care Coordinator Karen Lamoine (at our Uptown Dallas location) was the former owner of Prestige Laser Hair Removal Centers. Karen joined the SKINTASTIC team a little over three years ago, and has over 15 years experience in laser hair removal.
The Basic Science: Lasers that are used for laser hair removal/reduction are programmed to target a single spectral wavelength—the color of the hair. The heat that the laser produces is absorbed by the pigment (or melanin) of the individual hairs. The quick flash of laser heat damages the hair root where most of the hair’s melanin is stored, so that the root will now be permanently unable to continue growing hair. The laser heating is carefully timed so that only the hair shaft and root are affected, while surrounding tissue is not damaged. Skin color, hair color and density all are considerations for the laser operator. Dallas area residents with darker skin-types cannot always safely be treated with conventional laser hair removal treatments because their darker skin melanin also attracts laser heat.
While various hair reduction lasers have been developed which claim to be safe for people of color, Skintastic does not endorse a specific laser as being consistently safe and effective for our Dallas or Plano area darker-skinned patients.
Permanent laser hair ‘reduction’ is a more accurate description. It is important to understand that hair grows in cyles. While hair follicle #1 is growing hair, follicle #2–beside it may be in a dormant ‘resting’ stage, while hair follicle #3 is shedding its hair. From one follicle to the next, whether it is growing, shedding or resting is entirely random. Therefore, a number of laser hair removal treatments must be spread out over several months to treat most of the follicles as they enter their individual growth cycles, when the hair root is active and the melanin is available for laser heat-targeting.
Complete hair removal is not always possible–no matter how successful the treatments are, you are likely to encounter ‘straggler’ hairs that managed to evade the laser’s heat by remaining in a longer resting phase. A 60 to 80% overall hair reduction in the treated area is generally considered to be a successful hair reduction result. Every patient is different—the number of treatments you need will depend upon a combination of factors, including your particular skin-type, your hair color and density, and the length of your hair growth and dormancy cycles.
Some of the most requested permanent laser hair removal treatments by our Dallas or Plano area patients are laser hair removal for the face, upper lip and neck hair removal, chest hair removal, underarms, back hair removal, abdomen, bikini line and leg hair removal.
