The science behind SmartLipo™: A small 1 millimeter-thick cannula, or tube, containing a laser fiber, is inserted into the skin and is moved through the area to be treated. The doctor controls the laser bursts, and can see the areas that the laser is treating, as the light emitted by the laser is visible through the skin. The laser's energy is applied directly to the fat cells, causing them to rupture, and the liquefied fat is either suctioned or drained from the incision, or it is absorbed by the body’s lymphatic system and excreted naturally. There is no measurable increase in fatty levels, cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood; or any known increase for risk of heart attack or stroke. Simultaneously, the same heating that dissolves fat cells causes the surrounding dermal tissue to tighten and to form new collagen growth in response, improving the overall smoothness and condition of the skin in an ongoing process—with continued improvements for up to six months afterward in the treated areas. A Smartlipo™ lipolysis session takes around 45 minutes, and is performed under local anesthesia. The procedure, compared with traditional liposuction, generally results in less tissue trauma, swelling and bleeding (due to instant coagulation of smaller blood vessels), and consequently, a speedier recovery. As with any medical procedure, there are still associated risks, but there have been no serious side effects reported with Smartlipo™. After treatment, patients are instructed to wear compression garments for a couple of weeks, to maximize their long-term tightening results.
