How does hair removal work?
The newest cosmetic lasers utilize light energy that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft, transferring thermal heat to the hair follicle, damaging the follicle. This follicular damage prevents future hair re-growth.
Is the hair removal permanent?
Theoretically, damaging hair follicle can remove unwanted hair permanently. Due to the nature of hair growth and factors that influence it, results are variable. The effect of repeated treatments is cumulative. Most people either experience a marked reduction in hair numbers, or the re-growth is finer and lighter in color.
Will I need more than 1 treatment?
Yes, nearly always. The laser only works on hair that is actively growing (anagen phase). Resting hair (telegen phase) is resistant to the laser. Depending on the body site, various percentages of hair are in the growing phase at one time. Some sites require 3 or 4 treatments, while others require more, depending on the degree of hair thinning or reduction that you desire.
How frequent are the treatments?
Treatments can be performed anytime hair re-growth is noted, however, it is recommended at one-month intervals.
Does the laser hurt?
There is some discomfort with laser treatment. Some lasers have a chill tip that uses a cooling gel to numb and protect the skin from any thermal damage. Sensitive areas can be pre-treated with a topical anesthetic cream. There may be some mild redness and swelling for several hours afterwards, which can be treated with Aloe or hydrocortisone cream.
Can the laser be used on dark skin?
Yes, now any skin type and color can be treated. Fair skinned individuals with black, coarse hair generally have the best results. Dark skinned patients should be treated with a bleaching cream for three to four weeks prior to the laser. This will prevent hyperpigmentation after the treatment. Patients with blonde or gray hair previously noted poor results with laser hair removal; however, with Skintastic’s new Syneron Aurora DS™ laser, hair removal on darker skin tones and light-colored hair is safer and much more effective.
Are there any risks?
Health risks are minimal. You should, however, read the patient information and consent forms carefully. One of our doctors or board-certified, licensed aestheticians will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
Can I be treated if I am pregnant?
You should not have laser treatments for hair removal if you are pregnant. No known problems have been documented; however, skin vascularity and sensitivity changes can occur during pregnancy.
What should I do before laser treatment?
You should not tan your skin, but do use sunscreens on all exposed skin for two to four weeks prior to treatment. Stop all topical skin creams for at least 5 days before your treatment.
