Blepharoplasty is a surgery used to improve the area around the eye. Blepharoplasties may be used to remove excess skin of the upper eyelids to improve the field of vision, or for cosmetic reasons. Blepharoplasty also address the unsightly ‘bags’ caused by excess skin and fat beneath the eye. Blepharoplasty may be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids, or upper and lower lids of both eyes at the same time. While surgery on both eyes is generally performed in one session, blepharoplasty sometimes is performed on only one eye or eyelid. SKINTASTIC often performs blepharoplasty in conjunction with The VitalizeLift quick recovery lower facelift, which addresses loose skin of the mid- to lower face and neck. The VitalizeLift and blepharoplasty procedures can sometimes be performed within the same surgical session.

Excess upper eyelid skin can be more than a nuisance–it can gradually interfere with your vision more and more, until your ability to drive or perform . To determine whether excess upper eyelid skin interferes with your vision, a test can be performed by an opthalmologist which measures your ability to see objects in their peripheral vision in a natural position and with the excess skin taped out of the way. Excess upper eyelid skin creates a problem for many women when they apply cosmetics. Upper eyelid blepharoplasty involves removing the excess skin and sometimes a portion of the muscle of the upper lid, and closing the incision in a natural skin crease. Once healed, the incision is imperceptible. During the procedure, fat may be removed from the middle part of the eyelid to produce a less full look. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty is usually a strictly cosmetic procedure. It involves removing the fat from around the lower portion of the eye which causes bulges around the eyes as we age. The procedure can be performed from the inside of the eyelid, or through a small incision in the skin just below the eyelash line. In either case, once the incision heals, it too is imperceptible.

There are risks associated with blepharoplasty procedures and it is always important to seek a trained and experienced surgeon. A member of the SKINTASTIC surgical staff will be happy to discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure with you. It is important to share all information about any medical problems you are experiencing or medications that you are taking, including herbal supplements and over the counter medications; certain medicines, herbs and homeopathic remedies are known to interfere with blood clotting and could increase the risks associated with surgery. Dr. Adelglass may require that you cease from using certain medications or herbal treatments for a time period before and after surgery to ensure the best possible outcome.

Elective blepharoplasty surgery is generally performed as an in-office surgical procedure, while medically-required blepharoplasty surgeries are performed by Dr. Adelglass at the Texas Health Center for Diagnostics and Surgery’s surgical facility. Recovery times vary from patient to patient; however, most patients are able to return to normal, non-strenuous activities within a week.
